shining maturity

My husband and I had a plan in our minds to go to Kyoto searching for some coloured maple leaves.

We wanted to go to mountainous area by train, but as the forecast said it would be going to rain, so we changed the destination and tried to stroll around more convenient area like a trip to nowhere.

We walked around the border between Nara and Kyoto where the altitude was a little higher than that of our residential area, expecting some colourful maple leaves by lower temperature.

As the forecast said the weather would be unstable, sometimes overcasting, sometimes sprinkling and when it had stopped abruptly the sun was out again.

Luckily enough we could see some shinning leaves for a while intermittently,
and when it started to rain again we took a rest in a small café with good coffee.

In Japan the saying 「女ごころと秋の空」,"A woman is a weathercock", is mentioned occasionally, but I wonder this unfair saying would be effectively said in English, too?

My husband actually said that I owed my opportunities for taking photos of the shining leaves to his good luck, while I was thinking about some abstraction of the world of leaves just before falling.

Maple leaves were young and

their greenness were so fluttery ,

and now they show their maturity

Look at all the gorgeous red leaves! I'm so jealous! Here in Tokyo the ginkgos remain stubbornly green, but you can see a bit of yellow on a few trees.

I love that last photo of the single ginkgo leaf between the red ones!

I've also heard the expression I've been accused of that a few times! Grin.

It reminds me of Verdi's opera Rigoletto, which contains these lines:

La donna è mobile
Qual piuma al vento,
Muta d'accento — e di pensiero.

Translated into English:

Woman is flighty
Like a feather in the wind,
She changes her voice — and her mind.

Your pictures truly capture the glory of autumn, that has inspired so many poets. I love your tanka!

Thank you for your interesting comment and introduction of some phrases of the opera, "Rigoletto".

I will find out Japanese traslation about them.

Finaly we can feel the deepen fall through the autumnal leaves, though the colour depends on the tree including gingko.

Jen

Thank you for your consideration about my post.
It's my pleasure to post my own tanka as well as some introduction of famous ones.

Really beautiful! It may sound a little strange but I always think the autumn maple leaves in Kyoto and Nara are different from those in Tokyo and are more beautiful! Probably because both cities have splendid temples and shrines and the colors of the leaves there match the solemn atmosphere of the old buildings with their grace.

Stunning photos.

Your poem (like many poems) unfortunately loses something in translation, as "frogs" or "limbs" have nothing to do with leaves in English, and somewhat jar the sense.

That a woman is as changeable as the weather is a common saying in English. I can't say I've met many examples of it in my experience, tho; no more than men. :-)

As far as seeing your post leaves are impressional in Tokyo as well.
There are many small temples and shrines in Nara and Kyoto which I have not yet visit, and so many place I want to come to know for viewing autumnal leaves.

Marc

Oh, I wrote " sometimes they are called Frogs Limbs" , but I noticed I did not know whether they call so in English.
And now I got to know the expression is weird.
I try to think about another way of translation.
Thank you very much for your advice.

Wonderful shots of the autumnal maple leaves. Ours here in Central Europe just turn their colour from green to bright yellow. Red maple leave you just find with the Japanese species in some of our parks here and there...

Thank you for visiting my blog.
I visited Europe only once in fall, and the yellow leaves which they collected by browing on a street were vividly remembered.
Have a nice days before coldness will come.
