longing

Walking through beneath the trees...I can see a vegetable garden alongside of a road where I sometimes take a walk with my dog.

In a corner of the garden, some sunflowers are in full bloom.

The following tanka poem was written by Yoko Nagai

This symmetric verse is so simple that let readers have an indelible impression even after having been read only once.

Simple but I feel something behind her words, and I found that it would be her longing.

Although Andalusia of

sunflowers

is a far field;

Though it's faraway,

Sunflowers in Andalusia

Before, I read in some article about the word, longing, and the implication of it.

Longing is "a-ko-ga-re" in Japanese: a(吾)= I, ko(此処)= here, gare(kareru(離れる)=leave.

That is to say, longing is to leave the place where the person is.

Some people start to travel leaving the safe refuge feeling a compulsion of longing for somewhere else.
And also, there are some cases that something like soul starts to travel with longing for somewhere else from someone who are staying there.

The case of the tanka poem by Yoko Nagai goes for the latter.
And the feeling that readers can read the between the simple lines is travelling of her soul, I think.

I have longing for some unknown place or country once in a while, besides I wish my daily life would be over without any mishap.

The sun will set in behind my neighbour's roof, and on the mountain I can see over the roof they will light soon for those who will be there for enjoying cool evening breeze.

Hi, Haricot.
Talking of Summer, Yes,Sunflower. "Longing is leaving"
convinced me. But This tanka poem is difficult for me. I can get her longing to Andalucia but can't go ahead from there.
It looks fun to see that the light of cable car goes down speedily.

Hello, Haricot!
Beautiful pictures you make. I like these stone stairs, they look so ancient and romantic.

This is so well composed that I was drawn to the post with beautiful pictures.
Starting with a path in the shade of trees, summery sunflowers, and flower-related tanka associated with "longing", and then quiet night comes again. Though in this season, cool air on the top of the hill at night entertains people.

Enjoy your summer, haricot.

I like the idea of night time lights being a chain. They do look like that but I had not thought about it before. Chaining the natural mountainside with man-made objects.

Hi,Haricot!
Have a great day!

I love sunflowers as they are the symbol of ripeness, of summer, of loe repleate, of longing for the stars and the lands beyond the horizon. And I love your photos, too!
But...when it comes to the poems, I believe that IN THIS POSTING they sound better in Japanese than in English!
Well, this is an old story and it happens with most translations, no matter the languages implied.

Ekaterina, Cosmos, Jenny

Such beautiful images. I find the first and the last one especially captivating. So lovely. I read your words like poetry.

Maybe Ms. Nagai wasn't robust, so her desire and longing would be strong enough as the reverese, I suppose.
Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for your visiting and having left such a nice comment.
I hope that you don't have so much high-temperature and humidity.
Have a good weekend.

Thank you for reading taking your time.
We have heat wave these days during day time, and it's hard to walk even in a shadow. When I took these photos the temperature was milder.
Keep cool and have a nice time.

Thank you for your comment

Olga
Thank you very much.
I started to make this blog for exercise to write English phrases.
It's long way, though I'm encouraged a lot.
