pol pot...

Arousing, my ears caught bleakly

sound of falling drops

pol...pot

...It's the name of a man,

Pol Pot Takahiro Ohtsuji

In this tanka poem the writer overlays an image on another image effectively by an onomatopoeia, pol pot, from drops to a name.

Pol Pot(1925~1998) is a notorious Cambodian prime minister(1976~1997), as it well known.
In genre of tanka, they can sing about almost all events, landscapes, dairy matters and social ones.

In the case of social matters it is difficult to describe something more than mouthing slogans, because writers usually get information through media.

Although I don't know if this one came into effect well or not, I could not help making this about aftermath of 3.11 disaster by earthquake and Tsunami, around one month later.

About four months have passed since it occurred, there are still more than 22,000 dead and unexplained disappearances.

Being fallen

and being carried on

It saw the centre of sphere

for the first time,

The statue of Lenin Torahiko Ohtsuka

Vladimir Lenin was a Marxist in Soviet, and this tanka is written in a sort of sarcastic way for the famous parson and the statue.

I suppose that many readers would bring up the image of Saddam Hussein's statue that was pulled down in 2003.

As for a statue I also remembered the story " Happy Prince"by Oscar Wilde. It is written with sarcastic point of view, in a different way. (plot is here)

The rainy season around this area was over only this week.

How interesting to associate Pol Pot with the sound of falling rain, sad because of the tragedy that he created.

Modern tank ( am I right in saying this?)seems to be allowed to express fresh perceptiveness freely in a simple way. He sure was concerned about what was happening in Cambodia then.

I think your translation "staring at nothing" is a profound idea.

Beautiful sky with clouds again. A friend of mine says there's something you could see there. I never get tired of looking up at the clouds in the sky.
Thank you for the beautiful poetic photos.
Brace for the summer heat, haricot.

In your tanka, I wondered " 宙" meant infinity, and by your translation I understood your meaning by “staring at nothing” .

Beautiful blue sky and the blue flower reminded me of my favorite poem "Sky-blue Flower". Maybe the statue of Lenin got closer to the truth for the first time when fallen down to see the sky above. I always love looking up at the sky. It's beauty, it's immensity, and its ever-changing melody created by clouds formation infuses itself into my heart.

The last image is terrific! Thank you, haricot, for this post.

Thank you for your comment about tanka which was written about Pol Pot. It was tragic way for intellignetnsia and people who were forced to work in farms.

I'm interested in what you could see in the sky.

As you wrote it is said that current tanka is called modern tanka(現代短歌), and the ones written in a little older era, Meiji and Taisho, are called 近代短歌.

Thank you for your comment.

Celeste

I don't know the poem "Sky-blue Flower". I'd like to read it someday.

The sky tells us about the subtle change of season well, and you would find more than that when you look up ta the sky, I suppose.

Thank you for the comment.

Haricot!

It's nothing where white solid buds point. How uneasy about the future they and we are! I hope everything change for the better. But what can I do for it?
But is this reading right?
Anyway your sensibility is great.
Thank you for sharing your work.

Thanks so much for this beautiful post, haricot! I enjoyed very much as usual reading your translations and interpretations about the two tanka-poems that Ohtsuji and Ohtsuka have written. I found the usage of "pol pot" in the Otsuji's tanka as raindrops very interesting! Your own tanka-poem deeply resonates with me!! It tells so well how we feel about the tragedy caused by the quakes and tsunamis.
