An invitation card for an exhibition arrived one morning, when it was snowing on and off.
It was from my brother, five years younger than I, who was art teacher and retired earlier, and started to enjoy to make some works of etching.
It is the second time for him to put on a solo exhibition of his etching works in a small gallery.
And the theme seemed almost the same as the former works as far as I could tell from the picture on the card.
The works, a little abstract, looked like some exotic or new towns for me.
Or maybe they are some towns in future.
At the first exhibition I asked him which work he had a particular fondness for,
and he said to me that he enjoyed some unexpected effects which were created by some condition of corrosion of copper plates, pointing out some small parts.Early last autumn I came to know that he was diagnosed with a fatal disease.
After that he had to be hospitalised for a week once a month and it seemed he worked on his etching when he could while at home.
Maybe he enjoyed this exhibition as much as his first one, considering his diagnosis. I only guessed so, because we did not talk much this time.
Seeing his works I noticed his buildings did not have any escape stairways.
Some time ago, I wrote the following tanka while looking at an escape stairway in a town.
新しきビルと思えど見慣れたる非常階段を脇につけたり
A newly-erected building,
at least it looks so,
quite familiar-looking it is
on an escape stairway itself
for my eyes
Without knowing the reason I felt at ease to see his buildings which had no escape stairways but keyboard-like lines in some works.
In addition to it I felt some music seeing his works.
After I came back home I listened to an old CD.
The melancholic voice of Georges Moustaki made me feel fragile, and I cried a little.
It was drizzly day today.
In spite of it,a bird, white eye, which visited my garden did its bathing in
a watering plate. He must want to clean his plumage before returning to a nest.
I saw some Winter sweets( Chimonanthus praecox, 蝋梅)blooming
at back-fence of my neighbour. They are blooming like small yellow lights in dim weather. In this early evening such tiny matters and faint hint of spring in the air solaced me a lot.

Very beautiful, poetic pictures! I like the way you write.
"he enjoyed some unexpected effects which were created by the condition" "his building didn't have any escape stairway";
I think he is living his life to the full leaving everything to divine province.
I do hope he'll get along well with the disease and get well.
The white-eye shot is so cute!
Hello,Haricot.

弟さんご自分の作品を発表されて、本当に素晴らしいと思いました。
お元気になられますように、心から願っています。
メジロ君元気ですね!

Salut Haricot,
Celeste
I sensed your tender feeling to your brother. I hope he will get well.
The Chimonanthus in the rain also are tasteful and the white-eye's shot is nice timing.
I cried too as I read your post. I am so sorry about your brother, I hope things turn out good and he will be better. I love that he is creating and his art is so interesting. I enjoyed your wonderful pictures.
For what it's worth Haricot, my thoughts are with your brother and yourself.
The exhibition looks very much my sort of exhibition. From what I can see of them on small scale the images are fascinating. The last and largest one of very great interest.
This is a beautiful and heartfelt post, haricot, which made me a little sad and then elevated my spirit again. I’m sorry about his disease, but I’m relieved that he has something wonderful to devote himself to and distract himself. I wish his treatment be effective and can have exhibition one after another in future. Talking of an emergency staircase, I saw dangling or unfunctional emergency staircases outside the uncollapsed buildings when I went back to Kobe right after the Earthquake. I wondered if it was not for emergency? I like the White-eye and the dripping soft yellow Winter-sweets.
Oh Haricot--I am sorry about your brother's illness. I'm glad he has continued with his art. Your words and pictures are tender and thoughtful. Everything you say is multi-facted and meaningful.
I was really touched by this post; your brother's stylish artworks, your lovely tanka-poem, roubai's yellow blossoms, Moustaki, and above all your thoughts on him. It was truly wonderful that he had such a lovely exhibition and that you could go and see his works.
As Moustaki wrote in his Ma liberté, it seems to me your brother enjoys his freedom in paiting at present.
Ma liberté
Toi qui m'as fait aimer
Même la solitude
Many hugs!

Thank you very much.
Some white eyes often visit my garden from late autumn to early spring.
I don't know they are migrant birds or not, though.

Thank you very much.
I trust on the medical progress, and I guess my brother does as well.
To devote himself is quite well, I think too, though sometimes I'm anxious about his overwork. We also have to take care of ourselves. Have a good and relax weekend.
Jen
Thank you very much.
Your words sound so gently and penetrate into my heart. I will remember them when I 'll get fragile.

Your brother is a great artist. No escape exits is a metaphore in his situation that gave me the chills.
... and you, a wonderful person.
The visit of a bird is a blessing...
haricot,
I made a careless mistake, very sorry.
and a splendid artist like you
→and is a splendid artist like you.

Thank you for your thought about his etching. I'm not artist I think but really want to try to be.
And never mind about tiny grammar, which I make mistake so often.(^^;)

Thank you for your vigorous comment. It makes me happy!

Thank you for your warm comment.
I'm glad to hear your opinion about my brother's works.
your poetry and your brothers etchings make me think you both share an artful spirit. his work is something i'd love to see more of. and am so saddened to hear of his illness. you write with such beauty and simplicity and emotion. and your photography glides along with your writing so naturally. thank you for sharing all this with us. this is a beautiful post.
