Birds
:::::::::::::::
This is the fourth time for me to visit Koya pond
(昆陽池), in Itami city in Hyogo prefecture.

There is snow falling

When I came here for the first time, there was snow fall, and a flock
of gulls, a sort of gull called yuri-kamome in Japanese, soared up into the gray sky all together suddenly.
The white plumage with faint gray parts mingling with snow flakes gave me a lasting impression.
This pond which was made under leadership of preast Gyoki over1,200 years ago,is a famous stopover for migratory birds now.
I have visited in cold season and saw various birds, gulls, cormorants, many sorts of ducks and geese, swans and so on here.
In spring, swans deposit their eggs and it is said that people can see some swans swim with their chicks in early summer.
the islands in the pond
Koya-pond has artistic islands in the midst of it. The shape, looks like Japanese archipelagos, is observed like the photo(by Wikipedia) shows from air plane which has got departure from Osaka International Airport(Itami Airport) that is located near the pond.
In dairy life I enjoy to see the birds which come to visit my yard.
A lot of bush near my residence gradually have decreased because of becoming cut-over, therefore the birds need to search for their food in the residential area.

I found this You tube,"El Cant des Ocells"「鳥の歌」 by Pablo Casals.
The plaintive and delicate melody by a cellist makes me think of birds' difficult and fragile lives.
Their lives are not easy. The plaintive and delicate melody by a cellist makes me think of birds' difficult and fragile lives.
The old man , in "The Old man and the Sea", recognises a bird came to be close to his vessel long time after when the shore became to be unseen.
He talks to the bird which teetered on a line for fishing, having gripped it with his feet without examining it well,
"It's steady.""It's too steady. You shouldn't be that tired after a windless night," said he.
The old man's mind keeps tense throughout the story like the fishing line which is an unwashed one in daylight and a phosphorescent one at night.
It was the moment when he talked to the bird was the moment when his mind winded down unusually in the story.

So many birds!! And what a magnificent view it is!! I guess this pond is near the sea. I haven't seen gulls closely like this. The place is definitely worth seeing!! Now I understand why you visited here many times.
It is interesting to know this pond was also built by priest Gyoki who built many reservoirs in the 8th century and left many legends.
Thank you for your wonderful pictures and usefull information!!
Thank you for your information. I am glad to share the beautiful view and the birds. It is wonderful to know that the pond is a rich habitat for various birds.
It has been noticed that the number of sparrows has decreased over the years.
Although I do not know what causes them to disappear from residential areas, fields, on electric wires……it is very sad phenomenon. I try to give them grains in my yard, but they rarely come.
Thank you for the series of nice pictures and information. I never knew such a place exists in the area of Hanshin. I’d like to go to the pond, the paradise of birds. Maybe I have to wait for the time being, because chickens in Kyushu or a duck in Otsu City were confirmed as infected with the bird-flu virus. I hope no more infection. Less food and bird-flu, winter looks harsh season for birds.
Brown-eared bulbuls come to my garden and eat kale. It’s relaxing to watch them eating and flitting.
Thank you for sharing beautiful tune by cello and beautiful pictures along with the music.
"plaintive" as it may be, it also sounds calm and leisurely to me.
While they may have lots of difficult times surviving, people often long for birds with wings to fly freely. Seeing water birds floating on the pond or river, looking up at them flying in the sky makes me feel relaxed.
Maybe I see only good things about them.
I didn't know an epidemic of avian flu was so spreading among chikens. I understand "wings to fly freely" can be a menace as well. We can't blame migratory birds but I hope things won't get worse any farther.
When I was living in Minou city, we have been there with our children with bread crumbs two times maybe. I remember we were surprised at their number.
Speaking of bird that come in garden, a pair of bulbul build a nest on a dogwood in my garden. They were sitting on two eggs in turn. But I don't know when eggs became chicks and flied away. I wish I have observed well.
Thank you for all of your comments.
As you've pointed out, something has been changing in the birds' world in these years, or it might be long-anticipated matter ; decreasing in number and epidemic.
As for decreasing of sparrows, some reporters said on TV that it arose from the loss of rice field and suitable eaves for their nests.
Creatures are connected each other on their lives, including human beings of course. I hope good change to cohabit and minimum harm by the epidemic.
Thank you for your comment at «Louis'» very occasional blog (Pour-la-Famille) about the Festival of Sail.
«Louis» invites you to visit his main blog, San Francisco Bay Daily Photo. On Sundays, «Louis» hosts Sunday Bridges.
